What are the difference between all the lines?  I.E. reference line, drafting line, model line, and symbolic line?  If I want to create a line on plan it shows up in my 3D model how do I prevent this so I can draw in one elevation and I know it wont' be in any other views?

I'm sure most of this is better explained in the Help Menu but I will try.

Reference lines are great for making sure thinks are aligned through multiple views. They define an infinite plane based on the line that you draw. If you draw in Plan it will show up in elevation/section all other plans that cut through the area the line was drawn.

Model lines are used to add detail to the face of something. As you noticed when you use these that show up in 3D or in all views that see the plane the line was drawn in.

Drafting lines are used to add detail that is not face based or doesn't need to be seen in and other view. Like details.

Symbolic lines usually show up when you are creating families and are used to add things like hidden lines, door swing designation. This automatically assign to the correct subcategory for the Family type you are designing.

Keep in mind the Help Menu is your best friend when learning Revit...

Hope this helps.
