This is the first time I am trying to use the keynoting for a detail or a section.  When I click on the material I am trying to keynote, the 16 divisions come up.  Do I have to map all of my materials and elements the first time in order for them to work in the future? What am I doing wrong. Thanks

Your key notes have to eside in a txt file that you have associated with your project.

The default keynote that your are seeing is assigned through the properties of the family you are tagging.  Look at the properties for a common wall supplied with REVIT and you will see the keynote flag number.

There is nothing there in the keynote spot in the properties?  Here's a screen capture.

Remember, you said noting came up.  That's because nothing has been set.  Put in 09200 in the keynote field in the wall type and now if you keynote the wall by element, your keynote should say 09200.  If you don't want that, then change it to what you want or if you have an associated keynote file, just pick the write one when it pops up.

you can keynote by category, material and user.

I suggest dont keynote by user unless all else fails because it wont update.

We asign a keynote to the element eg wall, roof.

and also give materilas a keynote in the materials editor under identity.

we use the keynote number like a cataloge number for materials and use these for details
