Can anyone tell me whether it's possible to define the top and bottom of a column run with the grids at the top and bottom of said run? In other words, I am working on a tower that has leaning columns, and the most practical way to define the top and bottom of the columns is with a grid that shifts from level to level - or in this case from level 1 to level 12. Any clues would be greatly appreciated.

Although there is tons of topics on this forum if you had searched. There are primarily 2 ways to do this. NO you can't define the top and the bottom of the column by different grids. The way to do this is to either (1) do a profile sweep or (2) use a beam (not a column). Both ways, I believe the you will have to use a reference plane! HTH JB

JB, Thanks for the response. I did do a pretty exhautive search on the topic and found nothing in reference to my specific question - not sure why you thought I hadn't searched. You mentioned using a beam instead - can you tell me whether the ends of a beam can be locked to divergent grid interesections? thanks again.

Truth be told yes and no. You can snap the end of the beam to the intersection of the grids where they cross the reference plane but if the (sloped) columns were to change in height or angle, I don't believe they would automatically. This is not a perfect solution as it is just a work around! Then there is the issue of the profile when cut in plan. Because a beam is just a line (in coarse detail) and a column is shown as a profile (in coarse detail). We had to cover this situation with a note explaing or add a detail component (profile) to the end of the column (beam). HTH JB
