I know that I can cut vertical opening in a roof but is there a way to do it on horizontal or any other axis...? I need to remove bottom half-moon shape of the roof underneath the barrel;;; please see the image; thanks ps. working in 9.1

If the moon shape is a roof, use the join roof command.

you could create a void to cut that part of the roof. use cut geometry
