F8 - View > Dynamically Modify View - Dynamic View menu - How to get around? I want to spin and scroll with using some shortcut on the keyboard. I DO NOT WANT TO FIRST USE F8 - Functions tangent 8 -. and then from a new menu - Dynamic View -. select Scroll- Zoom and Spin or using SHIFT - CTRL to get at the commands at the menu. I DO NOT WANT TO USE THAT STUPID - DYNAMIC VIEW MENU - I HAVE TO CLOSE AFTER USING IT. I HAVE NEVER MET SUCH A STUPID 3D-PROGRAM . In all other programs you have shortcuts direct to zoom., scroll/pan and spin. - Or perhaps I am the stupid one . having missed something? HOW TO GET AROUND THIS???? YOU CAN OPEN the file KeyboardShortcuts.txt - to change other shortcuts to your own likings . but here in KeyboardShortcuts.txt you cannot find any way to use SCROLL, ZOOM AND SPIN direct . always you have to go through this stupid menu - View Dynamically.... HELP - SOMEONE WHO HAS A SOLUTION???

If you are using an intellipoint mouse, you can hold down shift, then hold down the centre button of your mouse and that will spin around the view, and still enable your objects to stay selected before and after the spin.

Thanks for answering. I know you can use the middle mouse button, but I am working without a mouse . because it is hard to use a mouse in the bed laying on your back working just like Churchill did That is really the best way to work I believe.... But most slaves working in this society have to sit and work. And they will get a pain in the neck. Just a tip - lie down and work . and you can work for hours without get any pains,... but you have to be your own employer...employers do not believe in bedworkers! Someday archictect can make offices with beds - and the office workers can have their own bed - the so called office bed - instead of the office chair and office desk. But using the middle mouse in bed that is the problem that the Revit people have not thought about. They have not given us bedworkers the chance to use keyboard shortcuts for scroll and spin. But they have given us keyboard shortcuts for zoom! Why not spin and scroll? OK! I have made a little solution instead of that phony F8 tangent I have choosed the space tangent instead to get the Dynamic View up. The space tangent is much better situated. A phony solution - but a little better....

Sorry! The space tangent is no good!!! You can use it to open the Dynamic View. But then you cannot use it to close the Dynamic view because of an undocumented feature. Your are told to use SHIFT and CTRL to change to SPIN and ZOOM but you can also use the space tangent to change between SCROLL, SPIN AND ZOOM. So therefore you cannot shut down the menu with the space tangent, So now I have in keyboardshortcuts.txt decided to use "BB" to bring up and close the Dynamic view! Why is Revit so stupid? I believe it is programmers that has made this in some respects very good program. But those programmers have not worked with the program themselves. They have never realized that SPIN, SCROLL and ZOOM are the most frequent used commands. Animation Master www.hash.com is programmed of people using the program -. and the program started on the Amiga - therefore this program are userfriendly. Have a look at AutoCad that is the most stupid program I Know - it is a DOS program from the beginning made by people wanting to sell - making money - profits -not even programmers.... I have made my own CAD.program - but it is taking to much time to do your own CAD-.programs..- Perhaps someone are willing to do a little CAD-programming? on http://sourceforge.net/???? Making a new userfriendly Revit???

Quoting Steve_Stafford - 2005-02-04 12:38:20

"Trying to use a computer these days without a mouse or pen is bizarre...rather than harrangue Revit consider yourself..."

Well, I am using a touchpad - is that bizzare?
I do not think so - do you?

Why argue? Better try to answer my question!
How to make a keyboard shortcut to SCROLL and SPIN? That was my question. Have you any good answer?

Revit has a lot of keyboard shortcuts to ZOOM in different manners! But you can not make shortcuts to SCROLL and SPIN
- among the most used commands. Isnīt that bizzare?

Why has the programmers of Revit forgot to make it possible to make those shortcuts when they have made it possible to have shortcuts to ZOOM? What is your explanation?
I believe they are programmers not users...
That is my belief.

After someone telling them they have missed something perhaps they will try to program in some other more userfriendly way. Or they will begin to work with the program to test if it is functioning in the long run.

Or they will give the user the oppurtunity to go into the program to make it as the user like to have it. That is the real solution. Making a program that the users can make better themselves. Revit has not a plugin architecture! Why not a plugin architecture?

It is like architecture - building houses the users cannot make changes to is not the best solution. Hope you understand my critique - hoping that a good program can get better.

regardles oof how you work, without the use of a mouse the dynamic view can still be accessed and shut whilst maintaining your selection. Simply select your objects, press f8, then scroll, spin, whatever, then press f8 again to shut the dynamic view and you will return to the screen with your selection in place. I'm sure thats not perfect and does require one tap for f8, and one click for spin, but its not too bad. Be intersted to hear if there is a way to modify the keyboard shortcuts that is quicker than that. Post edited on 2005-02-09 11:16:34 Post edited on 2005-02-09 11:17:43

What I have hoped on was that someone programming Revit could have given a good answer to my question. Telling me, telling all of us using Revit how to use only one keyboard shortcut to begin to SCROLL or to begin to SPIN. These are among the most used commands. You use them all the time. If you want to ZOOM you have a lot of commands to choose between to make shortcuts to because the ZOOM commands you can find on the view menu. But the SCROLL and SPIN commands are not on any of the menus, so you cannot make your own keyboard shortcut to them in the file keyboardshortcuts.txt. OR is it a workaround??? Can anyone having programmed Revit tell me? tell us? how to do? I want to go from a Floor Plan or an Elevation direct to a 3D view scrolling it or spinning it or zooming it, I do not want to use first a keyboard command like F8 - that tangent is not in a good place - and then from a menu choose SCROLL or SPIN and then have to close that menu. It is too much work if you want to work fast. There is so many other things in Revit you can critize too. I just not have time to write it all down, But let us look on a short list of topics: You can make shortcuts to the Elevations but not to the Levels. Why? View > Hide/Isolate is also such a stupid thing with a menu you have to get up and then select something to hide. Why can you not FIRST select something and then click on a keyboard shortcut to hide it? Some programmer able to answer that? And if you want to unhide something you have to unhide everything hidden, Why can you not choose what to unhide from a list like in 3D Studio? Look at how you group things. You can do a keyboard shortcut to group some things instead of using Edit > Group. BUT TO UNGROUP a group YOU CANNOT MAKE A KEYBOARD SHORTCUT. Or can you? Are there some programmer able to answer this? I can go on with GROUP - you cannot trust the things you have grouped in Revit - why? Some wrong programming? OK! You get a group with a group name in the workspace. But clicking on the Group name does not select the group. You have to right click and then chose Select All Instances. And you have no icons to hide the group or freeze it....Well, where are other programs having been better programmed! Still I like Revit... but why.... those stupidities? Perhaps there are workarounds in keyboardshortcuts.txt or in some other place? Some one knowing something? And why ? have to open keyboardshortcuts.txt in Notepad. Why can you not find it on the Settings menu???? Having to work with those shortcommings I have to sit down and meditate to get my feelings a little more calmer. So that is my advice sit down and meditate.... but meditation - loosing your I for a while - cannot solve all problems - so you have to stand up and speak too or write... Let us look on an other issue I came upon: Setting up the Revit Camera.... Well this is not VIZ.... Why not? Learn how to do it in Revit... some buttons missing! http://discussion.autodesk.com/servlet/JiveServlet/download/133-316965-2143799-25261/Setting%20Up%20the%20Revit%20Camera.pdf

Double click the elevation datum symbol, (circle with hatching at the end of a level) You can...notice under the VIEW menu Temporary Hide Isolate and the nested menu options beneath. If you select items and use the shortcuts available you can do this. May make you irritable but F8 is what your choice is if you don't wish to use a mouse or pen.... edit: I included quotes from your text, but after editing the post they disappeared, looks like a glitch in the forum? QUOTATONS ABOVE - THE QUOTATION FUNCTION ON REVITCITY SEEMS TO BE DOWN!!!!! Thank you for answering fast, Steve! OK! I can understand I have to use F8. But I have changed it to a combination a little more easy to reach -> "BB" menu:"view-dynamically modify view" But first I have to get a 3D-view and that I have changed to: "NN" menu:"view-new-default 3d view" So I go NN and then BB and then SHIFT to Spin and then BB to close the menu. But you tell me using a mouse I can do it easier. Well I have a touchpad that is the same, or? OK I can use the middle mouse tangent to zoom in a 3D view but first I have to use some tangent to make a 3D-viiew out of a plan or elevation, or? And with a mouse wanting to spin I have to use SHIFT also, or? There is no shortcut to SPIN even if you have a mouse., I have used 16-tangent mouses. That was funny indeed, Well., I still do not believe those programmers have used the program to do a three storey building! Sorry I did not catch what you meant by double click the elevation datum symbol. In what purpose? And I do not understand what I can do with some nested menu options I cannot find under Temporary Hide. Well I will not go on for ever with this - but Ungroup - can I make a shortcut for that? It is not on any menu so it is unpossible to make a shortcut in the file keyboardshortcuts.txt. Or can I open some other file and write something in that one? No I do not believe so... I hope the ones programming Revit will take some notice and perhaps in a new edition number 8? made a new GUI - Graphic User Interface and hopefully letting the users change it to their preferences. And making a plug-in architecture like in 3D-studio. They can study Animation Master to find a GUI with shortcuts - modelling human characters you have to have a fast GUI - building houses perhaps you can fiddle around a little more? OK! It is bit hard to quit this topic. There is more peculair things happening in Revit. Try this. Get a 3D view and then go to View > Orient > To other view And choose some view. And you will get a Section Box around your view. But I have not asked for any section Box! How to get around this????

With a mouse: Views other than 3D: Mbutton = pan Mbutton+ctrl = Zoom 3D views: Mbutton = pan Mbutton+shift = spin Mbutton + Ctrl = zoom With a pen: (pressing shift initiates behavior, this also works with mouse) Not 3d views: Right Click+Shift = pan, release shift, press Ctrl = zoom 3d views: Shift then Right Click = spin Release Shift = Pan Press Ctrl = zoom Press Shift = spin again with Shift pressed, release right click = end or press Esc to quit dynamic viewing Pen sounds hard, easier to do than write. You asked why no shortcut to level views (floor plans), double clicking the datum on a level will take you to the floor plan for that level, like elevations or section do if you double click on them. You can make shortcuts for the temporary hide isolate features. I've attached our keyboard shortcuts file which has every command in Revit 7.0 listed even if no shortcut is assigned. Thanks Steve for answering so detailed! OK , I have a mouse with a MiddleButton, and I have a pen too. But, I want to lie down on my back working like Churchill did! That is the best position for working I believe. Have you tested? You can work for hours not getting any pains in your neck! Sitting on a chair behind a table with a computer on it that is stupid I think. It is the way you get pain in the neck. Your neck muscles have to work all the time trying to get your head upright. And chairs and tables they were invented in the medieval age because they did not have any central heating in those days, And the floors were to cold to sit on. I want to go from an elevation or plan direct to spinning around in a 3D view with only one tangent press. And hopefully I can go back to the elevation or plan with one tangent press after having spinning around a bit. Everything more than one tangent press I will found to much fiddling around. I can see that you have to inititate a 3D view with F8 and then use Ctrl and Shift with both the mouse and pen to me it is one tangent press to much. Thank you for the keyboardshortcuts.txt file. I can see all the shortcuts to zoom . but none shortcuts to scroll and spin! Bizarre! You are telling me that all the commands in Revit is in the keyboardshortcuts, txt Well it is only the commands in the menus. Still you cannot do a shortcut for ungrouping... I will not go on disputing upon this question. My conclusion is that the programmers of Revit have to make some three storey or more storey towers themselves so they will realize that they have to give everyone their own freedom to customize Revit. And I hope some day a group of people will begin to do a free CAD-program so you can have all the program code making your own decisions in every detail. Have a look on Blender www.blender,org It is a FREE 3D-program as good as 3D Studio Max or some other 3D program - but not as good as Animation Master... I went in on their site - www.blender.org- And I was told: We have 1013 guests and 17 members online Revitcity has now 5 guests and 1 member online. Guess who the member is!

Ungroup used to be available under the Edit menu, don't know why it was removed but it is gone. Is it really that hard to press UNGROUP on the options bar? The only commands available via keyboard shortcuts are menu items...sorry that's the way it is. I have worked lying in bed when staying at a hotel and used my pen and tablet lying next to me. It was fine but I'd not like working that way all day, good for you, not for me. We're all different remember... I try not to let the things that Revit won't do or doesn't yet do bother me, I let the Revit development team know what I want , post a wish at the wishlist (AUGI) and move on, less stress that way. Try to enjoy yourself and not dwell on the little stuff you have no control over...just my opinion... Post edited on 2005-02-09 21:58:19
