Another useful tool would be to have the option to select an element & make it transparent instead of hide. Maybe use the wireframe function whilst in the shaded view to wire frame selected elements.

RAC 2008 you can. Click on the element > Right Click > Override Graphics in View>By Element/Catagory> Click the check box "Transparent" HTH
