I have scoured the web, and this is the first sub-forum that I have seen which specifically targets “Revit Project Management”.   That being said, I have seen very few threads within this forum which attempt to target the actual heading.  Hopefully you will be able to shed some light to this topic, and assist me on my quest.

Our firm is currently preparing for the bold leap to Revit.  Before we proceed too far down the line, I would like to develop (or obtain) an outline strategy for Revit/ BIM project management. This would consist of at least two simple and specific sections:

  1. Management guidelines/ strategies for in house staff (i.e. Revit drawing procedures/ protocol/ staff assignments).
  2. Management guidelines/ strategies for client, contractor & consultant coordination.

Obviously with the implementation of BIM, there is a significant shift in staff responsibilities. Revit will require advanced knowledge from the initial input software user, a task that is clearly above most interns’ capabilities.

I understand there is no single solution as the scope, staffing and programming of a individual project is subject to wide range of possiblitites, but as with most procedures, I believe the main points can be targeted down to a few specific strategies.  Any specific recommendations or links to the above items is greatly appreciated!

Thanks...I have briefly searched AUGI, but apparently not good enough (it's a real juggernaut).

Besides, they don't have a sub-forum perfectly titled "Revit Project Managment".  I'll report back what I find.

My reseller in California, CVIS, has helped many firms implement Revit quickly. When I attended the entry level Revit training in March, I was surprised at the project managment insight they offered. It is based on their experience working with architects who are working out problems with Revit in order to get deliverables completed on time. Also try emailing Jim Balding at Wimberly Allison Tong and Goo in Irvine, CA. He is production dept. manager and has published articles specifically answering your question.

Hey Bula,

I am in the process of developing our company guidlines for using revit. regarding your first point, this will be a very much specific for your firm, offcourse with drafting standards in place. I created a revit Quick Start that is very short and sweet (becuse we all know that people get very bored reading page after page of text) the quick start states stuff like  File structure, revit template, line weights (already included in the template file) Setting up a project and a visual office standards guide, basically how things should look.

alongside this, depends on your firm you will need to develope guide lines for how the drawings should look during the different stages (SD, DD, CD)

when it comes to working in a group: there should be only 1 person working on the project untill the end of DD. before hand you will need to figure out how big is the project, how many people are going to work on it, how will you divide the work load (worksets) this will vary from project to project.

The reason you haven't found a lot of information is (like I said before) that it's firm specific, each one manages people differently and most of the time they don't like sharing this info Smile

Your Reseller might have something for you, I know our local reseller does offer this service.

HTH Smile

I think many of us are still trying to figure this out.  The great thing about REVIT is that much of what you want to control can be setup in your project template.  Our firm's template already has all of our annotation families, linestyles, lineweights, common wall types, door and other often used families as well as title sheet, SD, DD, CD sheets.  It also has a door, window, room finish, Toilet accessory and area summary schedules and about a dozen of the CD sheets with title and sheet number including the CD title sheet with legends for code data, general notes, key map, sheet index already placed.

I want to improve this by adding more view templates and view browser organizations.  We also want to build different templates for different project types.  The more you can put right in front of your users, the better you can control the output.

I also think it is good to have only one person responsible for building families for specific projects and only one or two people able to modify standard families.  Not only is there a steep learning curve but your "standards" can be easily messed up.

On the AUGI website, this thread also is helpful, but more general in information:

AUGI at Autodesk: Forums>Go directly to forums>AEC>REVIT>Revit Architecture General>search "Golden Rules for Revit"

Dear all, I would like to hear more about BIM management. How to explain to my principle that Revit is the way forward? and what do they have to change?

i expirience a big change in office culture from sitting silently at your desk to communicating intensly. I think this is the main key to make Revit a success. As well designer and documentation people sort of melt together.... which is the point i am struggling with the most to explain that.

Anyone having different experience? found a good way around it?
