I am creating a family of doors and would like to make some of the standard family parameters an instance. Example a fire ratings.  I don't want to create seperate doors for just a fire rating.  Can this be done???

I don't think you can change the stock parameters from type to instance, but try.  If not just create a new shared parameter and make it instance based. However I don't see the harm in creating multiple door types for rated.
