hello revit people -- I am working on Revit Architecture 2008. I have 6 years commercial AutoCAD experience (advanced user), 3 months Revit Architecture 2008 experience (beginner user). 1st Revit project for me, 2nd Revit project in this office. We have just "broke up" a few parts of a Revit file out into smaller files that are now all linked together.  This was supposed to work as sort of an "X-reference" of sorts, and limit editing by certain employees, explore different parts/design options (since the 'design options' wouldn't do what we wanted easily) and help with our design process (SD phase) because we have drastic design changes weekly. We have come to realize that the walls will not join between the linked parts. For example, we have roughly a 30 story building, which we split into the following parts...HOTEL - RESIDENTIAL CONDO UNITS - LOBBY LEVEL/STOREFRONT/STREET - CURTAIN WALL - "MAIN" fileSo we split the Revit files into these 5 categories, and used the "main" file as the central file. Now, the walls won't join to the exterior shell. Are there any other problems anyone can foresee by doing this breaking-up and re-linking of Revit files? What is the purpose of "linking" another Revit file to a Revit file? What "linking" was meant to be used as CryingRVT to RVT) would help also...Is there any way to get the walls of 2 different linked Revit files to allow joins?

No, you cant join or really do anything with walls from a linked revit project.  Linking a revit project is used for a few different pourpases, Structural, Arch, and Mech all linking together, and also if you have a site/projects with mulitipul buidings.  If you are doing an entire development then each building should be its own file and linked in.  Linking should not be used for TF Packages.  The best way to control things with TF Packages right now is still with phases and worksets.  You can still control whom has access to what if your working worksets.  If you really wanted to break your one building it to sepearte projects I would have done it by floor, or every five floors...something like that.

Thanks for the input, Grant...

What we wound up doing in order to make the exterior link "wall join" to the floorplan link was to create the links on a floor by floor basis,    and group a chunk floors as one link.  (see screenshots, attached)This will let us explore options of each seperately, and maintain control of the parts of the building kind of like an X-ref would.  We have options within options right now, so it is not so straightforward how to solve the problemThe shell which was causing issues with joins between these links,  was re-incorporated into the corresponding floor plans so it would join properly. We are utilizing a "MAIN" file with datum lines:     then attaching a base and site by .RVT link,     a 2-12 floor hotel .RVT link,  an amenities levels 13-14th floor .RVT link, and condo levels 15-26 floor link.If anyone out there in RevitCity is trying out a Revit scheme like this for a tall commercial building, any and all tips would be greatly appreciated.Thanks-m
