I am very new to Revit - one of the first at my firm starting to use it! It has been exciting and also very frustrating so far. Several of us have had the basic Revit training, which the firm was happy to provide for us, but they are not wanting to pay for the advanced training session - shame. I'll have to admit I'm pretty overwhelmed trying to figure a lot of things out on my own. I am using RA 2008 and the problem i'm currently having is with a toilet family that's 2-d. We are partnered with another firm and have had the project split up (they own the floors). Problem is that the hatch they insist on putting on the floor is covering up the toilets (they are there - visibility is on and you can "see" them when you select in their general area). I've heard you can put a masking region in a 3-d toilet family to correct similar problems and i'm wondering if I can put one in a 2-d family? It doesnt look like its an option when I go to edit the family....

 Thanks!

It doesn't matter if it's a 2D or 3D family - you have the same options.  Masking Regions are in the Design Bar in the Family Editor.

Well thats what I thought too...but when I go in to "edit family" the masking region button is greyed out. It doesn't allow me to use it. Is there some trick to making it work? We inherited this model from the other firm we are working with - could that be part of the issue?

 Thanks!

Hmm... that's odd.  I've never encountered that before.  Could you post the family?

Thanks for taking a look. I hope I'm just missing something obvious!

The family is fine (I didn't think that was the cause, but it never hurts to check).

By chance, are you trying to make a masking region in a 3D view?  (As far as I know, all families open to a 3D view by default, even though it might look like an elevation or plan).  So make sure you're in a 2D view, since masking regions can only be created in 2D views (they are view direction specific).

I new it had to be something obvious! Thank you so much! Is there a way for the masking region to not cover up the detail lines in plan view? when I use masked region it covers the hatch but also covers the lines indicating that there's a seat, etc.

Check out the Revit Help file.  "Masking Regions in Model Families" has a good explanation.
