i have made 3 round columns 8,10,12 inch. each are a seperate family that i can adjust the hieght of with parameters, by making a profile of the column then revoling it about the axis. my question is could i have made 1 family then made the 8,10,12 inch column from that rather than 3 seperate families. i didn't know if a revolution could be changed in the family itself. can set parameters for the base of the column, which is square in shape but not the width of the revolution. am i correct in how i have created the families.

you can set a parameter for any dimension in your family, whether it be the width of the base or the radius of your round column. If the profiles of your columns are the same, you probably could have created them in just one family.
