I imagine this is a pretty basic thing to do, but maybe I've been awake too long today. I have a custom cable railing from a Revit file I didn't create. I want to use that railing in another file that I'm working on. How do I make the custom cable railing available for other future files?

Besides simply copying and pasting from one file to the other, is there a way to save the railing type someplace so that it comes up as an option every time I create a new railing?

Open the drawing with the railing in it. Open your new project. Click File-->Transfer File Standards. This will bring up a box listing all available file standards and families that can be transfered. Railing is one of them. (You might want to click "Check None" before selecting the railing)...Click Ok. HtH

Thanks for the advice, however, it seems to me that this is more or less the same as copy and paste. What I would ideally like is to save the custom railing so that anytime I start a new drawing the custom rail is an option for me, without having to transfer settings or copy from another file. Is there a way to do this? Somewhere in the program is the location for the basic "handrail-Rectangular, pipe, etc", can't I add the custom railing to this location? thanks.

The railing, like walls, is a system family. The only way to have the custom railing available when you start is to add it to the template that you start drawings with or transfer it every time. For my work I have created a custom template with all of my system families, custom loaded families, dimension setting, view settings, etc... alread loaded so that I can start drawing immediatly. This method seems to be common practice among Revit users.

Thanks, that's what I was looking for! I look forward to the day I'll have a template all setup for the way we work.
