Hi All

Just started learning revit, got a task to build a model using autocad dwg drawings, i have traced the walls for ground floor and first floor (got that far lol), now stuck, when i go into 3d view, they two sets of walls don't line up (level 1 and 2).  I tried to align a wall on level 1 with the corresponding wall on level 2 but it messes my level 2 wall structure up.  Only the wall i selected to align moves.  How would i solve this so that the two traced plans align correctly???  I would lock dimensions but dont appear to have any as i am literally tracing the walls on the dwg using structural walls and then picking the exterior faces of the drawn walls using the pick lines function when creating a structural wall.

Pleeeaaaaassssssseeeeeee Help! I'm goin insane

I do have other problems but we shall deal with them another time, just trying to blank them out for the minute : p

Regards

 Dave Buckley

I would draw my ground walls first, then go to the first floor level and set the visibilty to shut off the autocad drawing.  Set set the ground floor as an underlay and then draw the first floor level on top of the ground floor.

Or you could cut a section thru the model and just move the walls so they align right.

When the building that your drawing gets built, how is it going to be built?  Are you going to have the same core material for your ground floor and your first floor (studs, CMU, etc?) If so, build it in Revit as it will actually be built.  If you're going to put up walls and attatch floor plates to those walls, build it that way in Revit.  Then you won't worry about aligning 2 sets of walls because they will go all the way up.  Does that make sense?

Also, I always trace CAD drawings with the level below as an underlay, just in case my walls are different cores at different levels, to make sure that they will match up.

Best of luck.

wot happens if the walls are different widths at various points along one wall, for example, one long wall, that juts out on one side at various points, perhaps for chimney shoots etc, how would i get one wall to vary in width because when i trace i just get a standard width along the whole wall

You can set the walls to align by face, or core.  In most cases you will have the walls align by face.  This can be set in the bar above your drawing. If you set it to draw alinged to exterior face then the wall will base itself off of its outside face. Experiment with this a little you will find that depending on the face selection the wall will either be to the left or right of your cursor as you draw. Let me know how this ends up.

Since we are on the topic.

I have a question?

When I move my walls that are aligned to each other they both move.  I did not align or lock they are not locked together they were just drawn either draan above each other or one wall was split. They seem to be autolocked to each other, but there is no align lock set on them. Since we are talking about wall I thought I might throw another question out there.

Now on the idea that kesflower presented,

You can either create a stacked wall (search revit) or you can extend part of the wall up or down.

For example for a 2 story building with basement and brick on cmu with cmu only in basement

Create wall with brick and CMU structure.

click on wall>properties>Edi/new>structure: EDIT> preview (View preview on left)> viewSadscrolldown and select section : ...)> modify >Cryingclick on bottom of CMU in preview)> unlock the lock >OK>OK

The base extension distance in the element properties will now allow you to extend the cmu (-10') for a 10' basement with no brick.

Please let me know how this turns out.
