I'm importing a .skp file from Google Sketchup into Revit 9.1, and I'd like to be able to select faces of the imported object and manipulate them, as if the sketchup file was a revit mass. Is this possible? I haven't found a way yet, whether I'm trying to apply a wall type, or get a square foot area takeoff.

If you create an in-place family and import the skp file into that you'll be able to select the faces to apply walls etc. However, with all imported geometry in revit you will not be able to resize it. Once imported it is a fixed size. You can however apply you elements to the faces and then adjust the walls etc away from the face of the mass as necessary.

And how does one go about creating an "in-place" family? I haven't done a lot of work with editing or creating families.

Click on "Compnant" then "Create in Place" at on the property bar.

Alright, so I started the process of creating a new family within a file, imported my sketchup building into that file, and selected "finish family". But Revit still doesn't recognize individual faces of that object - for instance, if I try to create a wall by face, the cursor will not locate a discreet face on the object. Am I doing something wrong, or out of sequence?

Other than the top third where you have just lines and no planes from sketchup I got it to work. Go into 3D. Then go to "Componet" under the Basics toolbar, the "Create in place", select "Generic Models". Then go file->import cad fomrats-> sketchup model. Make sure that "Current View Only" and "Link" are both unchecked. select the file and click open. click "Finish Family" and thats all that i did. Now i went to wall, then chose by face and it worked for me just fine. Let me know how that works. Note: walls can not be assigned to a horizontal face.

One last thing - when I import, as Mr. Spot mentioned, the geometry can't be re-sized. Problem is, in Sketchup I can't scale the model 100% to accurate size (I'm off on the base width by 5", but it's an 800' tall building, so that will add up). Is there nothing I can do in revit to scale this imported object?

Im not really seeing what you mean that you cant scale. In the family editor, before you finish the family you can click on the linked sketchup file and use the scale tool (next to "group" and "mirror" to scale it appropriatly. Granted that it has to be a proportinal scale so all 3 directiosn will scale the same. But if you know that your building is 800 feet tall you can scale it so that it is 800 feet tall. You just cant strech and skew it if you need to make it taller while retaining the same size foot print.
