We need a way to tag furniture and movable equipment - the tag would hold a bunch of schedulable information PLUS the room/department/floor/building/etc. where the item is located. This should automatically update if the item is moved.

This would be a HUGE selling point for Revit as a BIM/FM tool for our clients. I doubt they would buy Revit or train their in-house people but we could offer it as an ongoing post-construction service.

I know it is not available in RAC 08 - anyone know a workaround or other way to do this in Revit?

Furniture knows what room its in, so in your furniture schedule(fields tab) there is a pulldown in the lower left, click it and select room info.  Then you can add the room info you want to your furn schedule.  It does update when the furn is moved. We use this for lockers and seating in restaurants.

Do you know any way to create a custom equipment tag to do the same thing?

I don't know what you mean by a custom tag.  We usually think of a tag as something in our drawings.  These tags can be set up to have any schedulable parameter.  But I think you mean a tag that is printed seperately and this cout be done too.  You could set up a sheet (printed as a tag) that would have a schedule on it with all of the information you want.  Set it up for each item or room using filters.

We already use Revit for Facilities Management for one of our clients.

We've had created a big list of shared parameters for fields they required and added them to every family in the project.  Then we have a Multi-Category Tag which tags the Item No. for each element.

We do a lot of work with biotech, pharmaceutical and educational/research clients. They have a huge amount of benchtop equipment that is typically not shown on the drawings (although space, utilities, waste and exhaust allowances have to be made for it). I hope to create a generic equipment family that will be variable in w/d/h, could be floor, bench or wall mounted and would have hidden parameters that list:

Name, Asset Number, Location (room name/number/floor/dept/building),

Dimensions,

BTU out, Utility requirements: Electrical/Lab Gas/Vacuum/Specialty gas(ses)/Purified (RO/DI) water/Etc.

ExhaustWaste

Notes (Vibration-sensitive, noisy, EMF, etc)

All these should be schedulable and the location data should automatically upodate if the item is moved - Room number, name, floor/level and building name would be great. According to adesk, this "location-awareness" is not possible.

The enttities would show as dashed on plan/section/elevation and as semi-transparent solids in 3D

YOu shouldn'thave any problems creating families with shared parameters that do exactly that.  You may have to make them as furniture families instead of equipment, I just can't remember if equipment knows what room its in. but I bet it does. Do a quick schedule and see.  Once you've made the shared parameters file you can load those parameters into your projects and your tags.

That's great news! I was just having a discussion about that this morning and I wasn't sure if furniture would pick up the room info or not.

Also, as a little time saver and to ensure my standard set of FF&E shared parameters gets added to new furniture families, I created a custom furniture family template with the shared parameters pre-loaded.
