I read throught the help, lots of mention of it but nothing on how to make the layers of you wall extentable. anyone know how to do this? It happened in the office by accident and now that we want to do it we can't. I CC'd the wall from one project to the another but it lost the constrant that I want.

If you mean extending them up and down, when you are in the wall edit command, hit modify then select the layer at the top or the bottom of the wall, check the lock to show it as unlocked and then that layer should extend up or down separate from the rest of the layers.

Making the wall layers extendable is easy, and I'm sure you found can be a big help at times. Select the wall type you want to work with. Then open its properties, and Edit/New. Then click 'edit' in the structure catagory. Here is the tricky part, You can only modify your wall when it is in a sectional preview. So, open the preview tab and select section. Then you will notice that the button toward the bottom of the Edit window become usable. The 'Modify' button is the one you want to use. Then zoom into the top or bottom of your preview wall. Select the horizatal line of the layer you want to unlock. Notice when you select the layer that a padlock appears. Click the padlock to unlock that layer. Only consecutive layers can be unlocked. That is to say that you can't unlock the exterior siding, not unlock the sheathing, and then unlock the stud layer. It only works if the layers that you unlock are next to one another. Then these layers become extendable in section view of your model. When you click on the wall it will have 2 extension arrows, one controls the wall as a whole and the other controls your unlocked layers.
