I am mapping a rather large campus with over 100 buildings, Id like to be able to focus on one area of the campus at a time. the large topo im working with now is just too big of a file. can you "cut up" a topo and link the pieces back to a master/central file so you can isolate only a few areas at a time?

you can but you will end up with a line at the joins...

I assume you are working with linked files with over 100 buildings...

Create some sort of grid lines to define the areas you plan to split.  I've had some great success with Revit 2008 by spliting out small areas of topo, grouping them, then turning them into a link so I can modify the small piece of topo in a sep. revit session, then reload it back in.  YOu can always in the future, bind it then merge it back in.  Or just set up a logicall grid and label the areas,  ie Acre sections or whatever makes sense for the scale of your site.

yes the buildings are linked.   so if I redo the topo in smaller sections and link those to a master topo, would the buildings show up in both if I only link them to the smaller sections?   I would just have to reload the links in the smaller sections, then reload the links in the master, right?

From the help Menu:

When you import a model that contains linked models, the nested links display according to the Reference Type setting in their parent model. Options are Overlay and Attachment. Overlay does not load nested linked models (therefore they do not display in the project) and Attachment displays nested linked models.

The following image shows that Project A is linked into Project B (so Project B is the parent link for Project A). The Reference Type setting for Project B is Overlay, therefore when Project B is imported into Project C, Project A does not display.

If you change the Reference Type setting for Project B to Attachment, when you import Project B into Project C, the nested link (Project A) displays.

To show or hide nested linked models:

  1. Open the parent link for the nested model.
  2. Click File menu --> Manage Links.
  3. In the Manage Links dialog, click the Revit tab.
  4. In the Reference Type column, change the value for the linked model to one of the following:
    • Attachment makes the linked model visible when its host is linked into another model.
    • Overlay does not load the linked model when its host is linked into another model. This is the default setting. When the Overlay option is selected and you import a model that contains nested links, a message displays indicating that the imported model contains nested links and that they will not be visible in the host model.
  5. Save and close the file.

Basically this says change your link types to Attachment to have them persist in subsequent links.

HTH.
