I've found I'm unable to get a total or grand total for linear feet in a material takeoff for walls!

anyone have a solution or work around?

If I go to formatting and select Length, Calculated totals is grayed out??

anyone Bueller, Bueller!

all responses greatly appreciated, if any!

I have been very successful in schedule creation that delivers ready to bid information.  recent takeoffs from Revit were dead on!  There are many thoughts I could share... but to your main point of lineal ft calcs for walls.  each family of walls will have some distinctive difference... depending on your method of building a project up from inception to CD's.

Walls include foundations in our case... invisible walls and other non descript wall objects.  Generally we build 2x4 and 2x6 walls, sometimes arches that are variable sized.  So when you do run your schedule out and you are happy with it... you should only see the walls you want calculated for the takeoff or other function of the schedule.  We use project parameters and type and family param's to detail the schedules... then filter the information down to only the needed info....that said..

once your family objects are in the schedule, go to the formatting tab in the schedule properties.  select your field "length" and check the "calculate" checkbox.

I'll try to attach a copy of our wall schedule used for material takeoff. It counts studs, treated plate, other plate and identifies info for purchasing where needed.  I have a couple of Sheets that are solely for all my takeoffs.  other sheets for 8x11 faxing of schedule info to vendors for bidding.  the schedules realy make a time difference when thought out well.  we have placed all of our schedules/parameters/sheets and repetitive work into our Revit design template.

Was that the answer?  calculate checkbox?  ... had problems with screen capture...will try again later.

the answer was calculated totals but as you can see I don't get that option.

I'm not sure where you are when I look at your images.  Your heading says material takeoff schedule.  How did you get there?

Set up your schedule and you should be able to get the results you need under schedule properties like what I've shown in the attached.

BTW I'm on 9.1

When I created a new one similar to yours it worked by creating a 'Schedule'. I originally created mine from 'Material Take-off' which caused the Length to not allow me to calculate totals.

lesson learned here

Great Catch... as I use schedules.. I tried some takeoffs... I didn't like them much... compared to just creating regular schedules in my takeoff formats... and calling them Schedule-Takeoff...- Windows.../ Doors/... Lumber etc.

I have also needed to utilize the length field frequently to perform other calculations.   Sometimes I cannot get a funtion or return on the calculation.  I later created a field/parameter called length2 which calls as a function the value from length.  it allows me to perform many more takeoffs as a result.

affdesco,

Could you possibly post a screen capture or .rvt file or something to that affect of you material takeoff schedule? It seems that you have a very good handle on material takeoffs and revit and it would be helpful to see first hand what you have created.

Thank you very much!
