Had to add a new layer to the cad file I am drawing on top of, so I could hide more autocad clutter. But when I reloaded the link 280 diminsions are no longer valid. The dims did not change and all I have to do is put them back but I can't afford this mistake often. Any trick to avoid this nightmare would be greatly appreciated.

Trick #1: Don't set needed dimensions until you're absolutely ready for them.

Trick #2: Don't reload the linked DWG until you absolutely need it to be.

Trick #3: Apply for a job at Autodesk and fix their blasted file type incompatibility problems.

Seriously, I haven't found a way to get around this and I share your frustration.  Aside from #3, the other 2 are rules I try to live by when I know I'll need to be linking things in.  One thing I've tried recently is importing one instance of the file and then linking another, be sure you rdimensions are set tot he imported instance so that it doesn't update when you reload the link.

Good luck, and let us know if you find another solution.

You fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous is never get involved in a land war in asia, but only slightly less well known is this! Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line!

I now add lines to my drawings before dimensioning even if the lines are already there in the link to avoid redimensioning (often room seperator lines).
