I was wondering if there was any way to create my own railing system.  Its for a balcony but the railings that Revit Architecture 2008 has aren't even close to what I need.  I need to change the profile of the railing and put a mesh inbetween each post.  Any help would be great thanks.

man, i was gonna come in here and fix you right up.  I make sweet railings all the time, but i've never had to make mesh.

The only thing i can think of is to make a balluster look like mesh.  You can make that in the family editor.

HAHA thanks Atomsk!  I've been messing around in the family editor but its kind of annoying... Nevermind the mesh I just need to make the railing have horizontal cables and curved balusters any suggestions? or should I just keep messing with the family editor?

I used the tutorials to learn how to make balusters and post.  Half of the trick is to know how to place them.  It takes a lot of practice, but once you get it done, it goes much faster the next time.

can you sketch a picture of what you are trying to do?

here are a couple of pictures of a rail i made.  It looks pretty simple, but i had to create everything in the family editor and then figure out the placment on my own.

(i blacked out the name of my project for security reasons)

Im not sure how great the picture turned out, but here is a set of railings that I did for a project of mine.  I had to use massing, and in place familys to create this.  It took me about three days to build this, with all the correct ADA, and other regulations.  The rendering is pretty shotty, but it should be alright to get the jist.  I will post a better rendering of it later.  Let me know what you all think, as well as if you know of a way to create that using revits "Railing" comand.

Bronco, your rendering is bad, but the railing is sweet.  I don't think i could do better.

DLicata, your sketch is do-able in Revit.  Just build the post and balusters in the family editor.  (mesh=balusters)

You wont have any rails.  Unless you decide to go with just cables.  If you do then you probably have to make those yourself too. (super easy)

HAHA cool.  I understand it now.  Thanks Atomsk.  It's getting closer but this is how it looks so far.

Pretty simple. Just space and offset several round balusters at odd distances and give them a wood material. I did this for a project I'm currently working on. Here are some settings.

Now my baluster material renders black. I changed it to wood. Is there a difference maybe between railing material and baluster material? B/c maybe I changed the railing thinking it was the baluster

Glad I can help. You need to assign the material when making the family.
