Let us assume that I have drawn up the exterior bearing walls for a building and framed into them in revit structure.

Now lets assume that the architect has updated the wall sizes, locations, materials, and openings in a revit model.

I have reviewed autodesk university's effective collaboration pdf. and it still seems to be beyond me. It does mention specific commands to use.  It does not very well explain how I execute the different applications of these commands.

It simply says to use the monitor tool.  Or use the copy tool.  But how?

Do you individually pick walls to monitor one by one before you import a linked rvt.??

Do you pick two items that you monitor between each other after you have the import linked??

Does this tool allow the structural wall I've created framed into and would like to preserve my connections from to adjust to different location, shape, etc.?

I really really really would like some help with this and I can't seem to find the resource.

Oh please help me wise ones of revit city.

Have you made any progress on this topic since you posted it in Jun 11, 2007? I'm in the same boat and I've reverted to trial and error to try and figure this tool out.

I've read the effective collaboration pdf. too. It's left me hanging.

The copy/monitor tool start by linking in a Revit project.  Once a project is linked in, you can copy elements of the linked file into your file.  Grids and levels are common elements that are copied.  If you are the structural engineer using Revit Structure, you want to have grids and levels in your project.  Assuming the architect has taken a stab at the grids and levels, rather than starting over the strucural engineer 'copies' the architects levels and grids to their project file.  Once they are copied, then yu can choose to 'monitor' them.  This means that if the architect moves the grid, the structural engineer will be notified of the impending change to their file.

The Revit help file provides some of the specifics on how to accomplish all of this.  Seach on 'copy' and you will see a multi-disicpline collaboration topic.  Some of the text is below.

HTH

Building projects that are worked on by teams of architects and structural engineers require a method for monitoring and coordinating changes between teams from the different disciplines. The Copy/Monitor tool accomplishes this task. Effective monitoring and coordination reduces mistakes and expensive rework. One example where you need monitoring and coordination is if the structural engineer moves a structural column that the architect placed. Revit Building can post a warning and then give options on how to proceed with the change.

The copy functionality copies grids, levels, columns, walls, floors, and openings from a linked project into a host project. You can modify these copied elements. Copied elements are automatically related to the original elements. The monitoring functionality sets and maintains relationships for grids, levels, columns, walls, floors, and openings that are in the host or linked project.

Copying Elements from a Linked Project

  1. Open an existing project or start a new project.
  2. Click File menuImport/LinkRevit.
  3. In the Add Link dialog, select the Revit model you want to link, and click Open.
  4. On the Options bar, click , and click Select Link, or on the Tools menu, click Copy/MonitorSelect Link.

Revit Building enters Copy/Monitor mode. The Design Bar changes to a Copy/Monitor tab.

Setting Options

  1. On the Design Bar, click Options.

The Copy/Monitor Options dialog opens. It has 5 tabs, one for grids, levels, columns, walls, and floors. On each tab are various options you can set for that type of element. This makes the copied element different from the original. Also, you can decide which element types you want to copy. On each tab, there is a heading called Original Type. Under that heading is a list of all of the element types from the linked project. For example, on the Levels tab, under Original Type, you might see Story Level and Story Level - no head.

  2. To copy the different elements, select a value from the New Type column.

By default, the original type in the linked file is mapped to the corresponding default type in the host file. You can change it to another type, which means the copy assumes the new type. You can also choose not to copy the element.

If desired, you can change the appearance of the element.

    • For Levels, you can offset the copy vertically from the original. You can also add a suffix or prefix to its name.
    • For grids, you can add a suffix or prefix to the copied grid.
    • For columns, you can split columns into smaller ones at level lines.
    • For walls, you can choose to copy hosted elements such as: windows, doors, and openings.
    • For floors, you can choose to copy inserts and openings.
NOTE:If this option is chosen, all inserts are copied as openings.
  3. Click OK to close Copy/Monitor Options dialog.
  4. On the Design Bar, click Copy.

To select more than one element at a time, select Multiple on the Options Bar. When you are done selecting elements, click Finish on the Options Bar.

  5. Place the cursor on the desired grids, levels, floors, walls and columns to copy, and click to copy them.

After you copy an element, an eyeball displays next to it to indicate it has a relationship with the original element.

  6. On the Design Bar, click Finish Mode.

If you modify a copied element, a warning dialog displays to indicate that a monitored element has changed. You can review those warnings using the Coordination Review command.

Establishing Relationships Between Elements

  1. Open an existing project or start a new project.

You can establish and monitor relationships between elements in a host and linked project or elements that are in the current project.

  2. On the Options bar, click , and click Select Link, or Use Current Project, or on the Tools menu, click Copy/MonitorSelect Link or Use Current Project.

Revit Building enters Copy/Monitor mode. The Design Bar changes to a Copy/Monitor tab.

  3. On the Design Bar, click Monitor.

You establish relationships between pairs of corresponding elements. For example, you select one grid and then another grid to form a relationship. You cannot monitor unlike pairs, such as a grid and a level. If you select an opening, you can monitor openings or inserts. For example, a window or door.

  4. Select a grid, level, floor, wall, opening, or column to monitor and then select a corresponding element.
  5. Continue selecting as many element pairs as desired.

After you select a pair of elements, an eyeball displays next to the first element to indicate it has a relationship.

  6. On the Design Bar, click Finish Mode.

If you modify one of the elements in a pair, a warning dialog displays to indicate that a monitored element has changed. You can review those warnings using the Coordination Review command.

    Stopping Element Monitoring

To stop element monitoring, select a monitored element, and click on the Options Bar.

Thank you, Tom for tackling this subject once again.  (yere awesome)

I found the help menu in the Copy/Monitor Options dialog box after I posted the above statement. I followed it carefully and I may actually be getting this to work!!!! Very happy about that, since it’s been a side project ever since I started linking models. However, I may have still hit a few snags.

What I was trying to do was simply monitor some of the elements between Revit Structure and Revit Architecture, so that the two models would appear similar and warn the user of the most recent updates, changes, and interferences. I was hoping to do this without having to create ‘copies’ of the elements that I want monitored, as it seemed to clutter the drawing.

This is what I did:

  • I have two projects, the skeleton (columns, beams, and foundation) in R.Str. and the walls, door, windows, and roof in R.Arch.

  • In R.Arch I linked the R. Str model and started the copy/monitor tool. Went through the options dialog and selected how I wanted the items to be copied as.

 > is it a good idea to have the item copied as something else, so that you can tell the difference between the two? When I select ‘copy original’ and finish it gives me a warning that it is creating a type 2 of ‘column xy’ so that there are no future complications.

  • Selected the items that I wanted to copy and monitor

  • Moved the copied columns by dragging the grid line and changed the shape of the floor slab to follow.

> this is the point where it becomes very discouraging, because I see the original columns and gridlines from the linked project and I cannot change them or delete them without binding the link and ungrouping it, or removing the link altogether… both are options that would defeat the purpose of this. I see this as cluttering the drawing and can be very confusing to a new user… like me.

  • Switching to R.Str. I linked the R.Arch file and placed it accordingly. I selected the ‘copy/monitor’ tool and selected the R.Arch. link.

  • In the Design Bar I ran the ‘coordination review’ It noticed the monitored items and asked for what action to take. YEA!!!!!

  • In the ‘action’ section I selected for the original to accept the changes, it did!!!!  One snag…

  • For the floor slab, every time I hit apply to accept the changes it would default back to the ‘do nothing’ response. I tried to leave a comment and I could not type in the edit box. When I finished the mode and zoomed out I noticed an updated copy of my floor slab placed off to the side…… hummm  I’m going to try this again tomorrow to see if I can get this down.

Please, if you notice anything that I am doing wrong or could do more efficiently, let me know! Attached are the models, mistakes and all.
