When i upgrade from an older version to a newer i lose all my "user materials".

You user materails are still there in all likelyhood.  User material definitions are held in a file called user.mlib  This file is placed in the default location of "C:documents and settings\all users\application data\autodesk\revit building 9.x\rendering\AccuRendRedist\support"  It is easiest to do a search an find the old user.mlib file and move it to the default location of you newly installed version of Revit.
A better approach might be to develop a standard network location for you material libraries that remains untouched by Revit installs.  If you do this, be sure to add your custom location to the rendering path in Settings>Options
