Im using the new RAC 2008 and had a question as to how to substitute my own elevation tag and for the tag to have the same parameters as the revit elevation tag.   -  we have been using a section tag to get the elevations b/c the section tag looks a little more easy on the eye.  it works sometimes...but we would like to do this the right way - any sugestions?

same thing w/ interior elevations

-i mean WTF hasn't autodesk figured this out yet...didnt revit 8 come out about 2-3 yrs ago...how can an architecture office make there drawings look unique to this office.  does it have to be a revit office...i mean its so easy to tell when a set of drawings is done in revit...b/c it has a stupid square eleation symbol on the plans...any pointers would help...thanks in advance.

Excepting some investigation in the API, I do not know of any ways to connect the parameters of annotations to the elevation info.  Your best bet is to just have an annotation that you can place and change the line visibilities (for multiple elevation markers if needed) and text via parameters.

I made one using a Generic Annotation, but ended up just using the Revit default for now.  We haven't had any projects where the clients have said "OH MY!!... what is that?  An elevation marker?  Please change it."

Why do architects get so stuck on elevation symbols? Aren't you more concerned that your design be correct and that your plans are well coordinated? The contractors could care less what your elevation symbol looks like when they are constructing the building. Its just a symbol, get over it.

There are apparently regional customs with respect to drafting conventions that influenced the graphic design of those elevation annotations in Revit.    It would be nice if Revit offered a broader selection of many graphic standards, but those symbols are part of the project management system that does so much of the dumb work of coordination that is so valuable in BIM - so I would avoid regressing to a CAD-like treatment of annotation, manually doing everything.

In the View panel of the design bar, when you place an elevation marker, Revit offers a choice between exterior and interior elevations.    And in the settings pulldown, you can modify what symbols are associated with the interior elevations, etc.    There is a good deal of flexibility here if one drills into the properties of the annotation symbols and tweaks things.    Well worth a little time to refine.    I find that I prefer a slightly smaller version, with a little less visual noise, than the default settings provide, for example.

I can't think of any reason you could not use these symbols everywhere, if you just want to get away from the squares (and the implied branding of the work as a Revit product rather than 'your own).

tgates, yours may be a fair call with respect to emphasis, but architects tend to be interested in the visual character of almost everything, and our drawings are often something we percieve to be a highly personal reflection of our craft.

"Why do architects get so stuck on elevation symbols?"

Usually the reason is because architects spend 5 or many more years learning that imperfection is not acceptable and a high level of graphical standards is the crucial key to properly communicating their design. Not that I expect you to understand this, as it is obvious that you are in fact not an architect.

HAHAhahahha... wow. I didn't realize they allowed contractors to use Revit.

From my end the graphical standards are VERY important. Our firm works in cooperation with a lot of other firms. The client has decided on the graphical standard for their drawings and they are very adamant about maintaining this standard. Consistency is the key and it cost the firms money to correct errors even if it is graphical. So I too would like to see more flexibility in the overall graphical presentation of construction documents. This includes everything from symbols to detailing. In my opinion design capability is very well thought out with Revit, but it does seem to fall short in some areas (not many though) the creation of construction documents.

An Architects drawings/standards are as important to them as the presentation of food to a chef! Can you slap some meat on a plate and be fed? Yes of course but the visual presentaion of a meal is every bit as important as the taste of the food itself. Its been my experience that when little attention has been paid to the details of presentation less has been paid to the correctness of the details themselves.
