Basically I have a single door peice of casework that I want to be able to check or uncheck whether its a right handed swing or a left handed swing. How can I incorporate this into the family as a parameter of some sort so all i have to do is click the flip icon and the door will automatically turn off the right hand detail lines/door handle and make the left hand version show up and vice versa? Is it even possible? Sorry if i am not making myself clear enuf. Thanks in advance

I'm not sure what you are asking. When you create a family, you can add the flipper to the family. That will flip all elements including model elements and drafting/detail elements.

You can add flippable options to ANY family? How do I go about that?

In the family, look at the tools on the left, there are control arrows, chose the type you need, ie left and right, front / back.

Thanks. Now is there a way to make a parameter that would let me have LH and RH options that would schedule and model correctly?

I don't believe what you are trying to do is possible using the flip controls from what i understand... You are loading nested doors families into a casework family and then loading that into a project correct? Those flip controls you add to the door family will not persist through the nesting process. That is, from inside the host family you'll be able to flip them but once in the project you won't have access to them (i think i don't have revit in front of me to check atm). What I would do (which will also work better for scheduling), is in your casework family add "family type" parameters for the family category of your doors. This gives you a drop down and allows you to select from all families of that category loaded into the casework family. Probably sounds a little confusing so I'd suggest you use this coupled with the revit help on how to create these parameters. You'd also need to set the door families to be "shared" in their family category and parameters settings in order to have them be individually schedulable. HTH.

thanks chris. maybe you could help me better understand the "shared" family category setting? like what does it do exactly? i am one of three people in my firm charged with the task of converting our office from autocad to Revit. We have had our first two projects go out on the streets using it although we had a LOT of acad linked files. My point is I am still learning Revit as I go myself and any info you can spill to me would be appreciated. Basically what you said is what I had hoped for, checking a box in instance parameters to determine how the swing is graphically represented all teh while making it a schedulable parameter somehow.

a lil more background wouldnt hurt..... we have not ventured into the realm of nested families. we all werent exactly sure how or if they even worked. If i am understanding correctly, we can create the cabinet doors as a family (ie, - cabinet LH.rvt and cabinet RH.rvt) and load those into the cabinet host family (ie. - cabinet.rvt). am i understanding that correctly? I am just not sure what the shared category gives me and what that exactly means. Sorry for my ignorance and extremem thanks for the help =)
