I would like to know how one would go about, when I want to take home my local file and work on it there and then bring it back to the office the next day and save the changes to the existing central file? Is this at all possible?

I post the question as we do not make use of a VPN for security reasons ans sometimes especially over weekends I do or would like to do work at home!

If someone can answer this, it would be great!

Thanks

This is an excerpt from the Revit 9.1 User Guide. I have not tested this though.

"WORKING OFF-LINE AND OFF-SITE

Team members can work on the project off-site:

  • Make the needed worksets editable while still at the office and on the network. Make sure to save the local file before closing it; otherwise, these changes to workset editability are not saved in the local file when you take it off-line.
  • Work on the project at home as you would in the office. You can modify elements in editable worksets, and you can create new elements in any workset.

To modify elements in a workset you have not checked out, you can specify the status of the workset as Editable. This is known as Editable at Risk and should be avoided whenever possible. If another user saves changes to any of the same elements that you have changed, you cannot save any of your changes to the central file; all your changes in all worksets are lost. You may be able to recover some of the changes by copying the changed elements and pasting them into a new local file."

Take home the central file & replace it when you come back in.... everyone (including you) must make a new local.  Only works if nobody else wants to work on the file.....

When taking the file home it states that the central file cannot be found and then the workset edibility is lost!

Any thoughts?

Simple .... When you save the file to take it home, choose disconnect from central then make this file a central file when you bring it back.

i did not understand neither from autodesk's documentation nor here, if it is possible for two people to take their local files home and then bring it back and save to central at the server.we are only two people and cannot work all the time together.actually most of the time we can work only at home

You can both check out the file but you must use worksets and you need to make sure you both work in seperate worksets.

make the worksets that you need editible.  Then Save to local (your local file will understand that you now have those worksets checked out).  Take home a copy of your local file, yes it might still complain, but ignore it, because central still knows that you have those worksets checked out.  Do be careful though, if you work in a workset that you did not check out, and someone else makes a change in that workset, then you loose all your work, as it becomes irreconsilable.

When you return to the office, copy your local file back onto your work machine, open it in Revit, and then save to central, it will push your changes to the Central file, and pull back any changes anyone else made in your absence.

Also, ensure that it is office policy NOT to relinquish a workset while a co worker is gone, because it is possible, all the other people in your office have to do is close the file, change their user name to yours, open the central file, relinquish all, and now you don't have any worksets checked out, and thus any work you do while at home, is lost.

Hope I didn't confuse you too much!
