We have begun shairing our Revit 9.1 models with other disciplines within our firm. I'm curious as to how others handle the following. I sent a copy of our Revit model on a large project to our structural department in another city. They opened the file (without starting a new project and linking our model into it). They did check the "Detach from Central". They moved a few crop regions so that they could see what they wanted and then closed the drawing. Even though the file was on a different server, and we all thought we were safe, the file was still linked to our central revit model. When we attempted to move the crop reagion in our office it told us that this element was not checked back in by one of our guys at the other office. We called, he tried to check it back in and "Save to Central", but the file corrupted, and we had to "rollback" the central file. We didn't really end up loosing much data. We updated the project and all workstations at our office today to Revit Architecture 2008. This appeared to release the checked out crop region. Now to my question. Is there a way to prevent this from happening again? Should starting a new project and linking our revit model in protect our data and model rights in our office so that other offices cannot "check out" parts of our model? What is a good practice rule that solves this problem? Thanks,

Are they using Revit structure? If so they really shouldn't be opening your file at all. You simply supply them the architectural model. They link into their structural model and choose to monitor certain elements and vice versa. If they are using Revit Architecture for some reason, then to create an isolated version of a file you can open the file with the "detach from central" option and save it in a different location OR you can open the file and do a save as with the option "make this a new central file". HTH.

Thanks! We apparently just skipped the step of creating a separate file for structural and linking ours into it. They were using Revit Structure. We'll make sure to create a separate file using "make this a new central file" so that they will be using a file that won't link to ours. Strange that it remained linked across two different server structures. Must be Borg technology. Thanks for your help!
