so i'm currently working on building a few famlies for my firm.  we do arch consulting, and were revit systems a bit more fleshed out would probably be there, but are still in building as it can accomplish almost all of our needs.

mostly due to confusion on the part of our clients we haven't actually worked in revit yet (i have, not at this firm though)  however there's enough interest for me to finally burn billable hours tweaking/building families, etc.  several of our clients want to work with us in revit using linked files.  i.e. they send us model updates ~weekly and we place our systems in a file with that model linked.

how do hosted objects behave when a linked file's hosting object (wall, floor, ceiling) have moved or been replaced?

my inclination is to set up all of our families as  non-hosted so that when a ceiling is revamped objects float free, and don't need to be recreated.  the issue i'm having is how to then locate those instances w/in a wall etc.   i.e. a step light along a stair will be annoying to relocate if/when the stair becomes curved.

thoughts?  how have others accomplished this sort of collaborative design in revit?

Most of the families that are included with Revit MEP are 'face based' for the same reasons you describe. The rule of thumb now from Autodesk is that unless and object physically cuts it's host, then go with face based or non-hosted families.

how do face based instances react when their host disappears though?  in example we'll start off in DD with a drop ceiling but end up with with a gyp ceiling by the end of DD and functionally we can use a generic down light for both, but unless the arch changes the ceiling type we will loose that layout if they delete the one and add another, no?

Yes, if the face disappears, then your family placed on the host face goes bye bye.

This is where the copy/monitor function comes into play.  If you were using Revit MEP, you copy/monitor the ceiling.  You have your own ceiling type defined that responds to the changes taking place in the architectural model.  I'm not sure how the copy/monitor function works from Revit Architectural to Architectural but it should probably be explored.

so.. the next question would be if i want to be able to switch between or load an ies file per instance/type do i need to be building the families in revit MEP, or does that not support that yet, and building it in building and switchign between the stock ies sources will allow me to later be able to change that when MEP is useful to lighting designers?

IES is now supported in Revit MEP 2008.  I think maybe you should take a look at MEP as it can do almost everything Revit Architecture can plus gives you IES, export gbXML to Trane Trace and other energy analysis packages, and better copy/monitor options with respect to rooms and other objects.
