I was wondering if there is any way to create a text and or a dimension in a family that will update when you create a new family type? I would like to create a cabinet fully dimensioned so when I change the width the dimsensions will update, or create a text as a number ie 24" that will change to 36" as the cabinet changes width. Thanks Ed

If I'm reading you correctly, you want a dimension in a family to come into the project to show up for you automatically. Basically what you have to do is make a hosted family of a "dimension" and put it in your cabinet family. It's not a real dimension, it just looks like one. So when it imports into your project, it appears your dimension is already there. You would have to make a text parameter (maybe from an autocad file, if I remember how to import text into families) that associated with the width dimension, so it updates when you change. This might be more difficult than just adding family types and associating your own text to it.
