I've tried creating one, but I can't seem to understand hw it really works.

I've tried creating a dual light (top and bottom) but the light comes from the sides.

Hmmm...

Any suggestions?

Practice.

Creating Light fixtures is an art form in itself.  I can't even explain how some of my light fixtures fail where others work perfectly.

You fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous is never get involved in a land war in asia, but only slightly less well known is this! Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line!

Post the fixture. I will sometimes create 2 lights and bring them into a file as shared lights, seems to work more consistently.

file > new family > light fixture.  Create the light fixture in 3d geometry.  Then apply a material to the surfaces that you would like light to come out of.  The material will be the light, look in accurender for the material name with light in it.  Then go to the family dialog box and at the bottom you put  how many lumens, lamps (probably 2 for you) and watts.  I have attached a family that i did, this one is not wall or ceiling based.  Good Luck.

Thanks for the post AR1237.  The attached file helped a lot also.  How you managed to make your solid only emit light from one side?  Thanks again for the help.
