Hi... I need to make a Gable VEnt that adjusts with the pitch of a roof. anybody have any advice on writing a formula to adjust the height of the vent depending on the width and the pitch?

atan (slope/12) where slope is your pitch, i.e. 7 in a 7:12 sloped roof. see attached

I've made a fancy one you're more than welcome too. It has some constraint problems I haven't figured out yet though.

 

My method uses a little different calculation than what Dgodfrey said, but that's what most use is the atan formula.

 

I did a rise/run and attached reference lines to the planes.

Here is the one I ended up making. The louvers arent too fancy but Im not planning on rendering this one.
