Application Programming Interface.

It is the external way into the Revit database and it allows you to add certain elements, change things, define new commands etc.

The Revit installation CD/DVD has a folder on it that has API samples, instructions etc.

Cool. Should I be using this?  What kinds of things can I change with it?

It is very powerful.  I'm not using it myself yet as it requires programming knowledge in the Microsoft .NET 2.0 environment and I'm not up to speed on that yet.

Examples of things you could do with the API:

- You could develop a command with it to number your doors based on what room they are in.

- You could load in room programs to a Revit schedule from Excel

- You could have a routine to setup sheets and views

Third party developers are starting to take a look at the Revit API and coming out with programs that make use of it.  In the structural world Robobat has released free extensions for Revit Structure 2008.

That's really cool.  We are looking for more ways to automate with Revit.  Thanks for the tips.  I'll have to look into it further.
