Hello All, Was wondering why I can't shorten the span of some of my OWSJ's (I used the one from the Library "LH Series Bar Joist 24LH11). I framed an opening for the stairs and can't span it to the new beam I placed to pick them up. It gives me the error "Can't make type "LH-Series Bar Joist : 24LH11". I use the pick and drag method in plan to do this. This is frustrating! I even made sure that the beam was at the correct elevation too. Any suggestions?? Thanks!

The way they are created, there are the ends of a fixed length and webbing that is arrayed. Becuase of the fixed end lengths and the fact that the array can't take on a value less than 2 which is derived from the length of the joist the creation will fail under a certin length. You could open the family in the family editor and take a look at what is driving geometry and determine what the minimum length is. I'm not a structural engineer, but those in our ofice who are generally do not use joists for the short spans as they probably can't be fabricated in the real world at that short of length either.

Thanks TomDorner, you are right...the joist length was too short for the family to accept. BTW, do you do individual Revit Training via webmeeting or another solution via internet/email? I went to your Blog but I can't find your email address to ask you. (Sorry if I missed it). You are always the person I want to answer my questions because you're usually right and I can understand easily what you post. Thanks!

Thanks for the kind words. My email is listed under my profile, just click on my name and select 'view profile'.I don't do training except for my employer and since we have 500 people in 15 offices I'm kept pretty busy. I try to keep doing a few posts a day on this site, but it is tough to keep up and I have to select only certain posts to answer otherwise this would be a full time job.
