in 20 years, houses will not have to be designed by architects because they are coming out with auto build programs. What will happen to all architects and more importantlty, to our beloved revitcity.com??!?!!?!?!?

The short answer is we will all still be here and still be just as busy with res projects as anytime before. The long answer is if you think back to the 50's america did the whole cookie cutter suburbs thing. While it worked ok at the time those things are getting bulldozed by the dozens or remodeled beyond recognition. Right now there are enough homebuilders that supply a half dozen homes with 2 layouts and 3 'options' that most people don't think of architecture when they think of housing. Besides people who buy these would likely never look to an architect to design them a home to fit their needs, they do like everyone else and adapt their needs to what they can afford in an area they like. So no matter how many autobuild programs are out there the fact remains that you can't get too creative and unique with a kit of pre designed parts. Most new res projects done by an architect are upper end homes and the owners do not want to look just like their neighbor. Don't forget about remodel projects. Ask a cookie cutter home builder to take on a major remodel project and I assure you the response will be something along the lines of "so you have a site you want us to demolish and build one of our homes on, which model are you interested in?" Therefore I don't see the res work shrinking much in 20 years or 120 years. If your really worried about work then all you really need to do is diversify your project/client base. If your focused on one or two big projects your setting yourself up to get wiped out if for some reason several large projects die in a short time span. Speaking of work, its time to get back to that.

I don't think architects will phase out quite like that. You are always going to need an architect. These building programs will always need someone to key in the variables, figure out the unknowns, use a little imagination and find out what the customer really wants. We (building industry professionals) are the ones who gather the information and make it apply to an idea. Now I do think software (building programs) will aid in this process and reduce the amount of time it takes to make an idea a reality. As for RevitCity? Hopefully it will evolve along with the rest of the building industry. Hopefully it will be here to fits the needs of its members. If not...well....there are others. And I have the strong feeling there will be more.
