How do other people/firms share common building details? This seems simple enough but when I saved my original detail (as a detail view) then used the commands File>Insert from File>View I get an error stating "The Revit project you have selected does not contain any views that may be inserted into another project. Only drafting views and drafting sheets that do not contain model view may be transfered between existing projects." This makes sense but the original detail was created from a wall section then a callout from that which I then traced over the original model lines with drafting lines and of course embelished it greatly. The view was also saved as a detail view as is the current one waiting for the import. All model lines were then cleared using visibility graphics. Any suggestions on how others share common details or even wall sections is greatly appreciated.

Hmmm... when I did this, I didn't use the Insert from File >> View command, I just opened the detail view and copied the content of the detail into another view. I think the difference here is that mine was from a drafting view. If it's just a detail view that you want, you may want to consider creating a detail component family and loading the common details that you use every project (or at least often) into your office template. This is what I'm working on now in our office.

You fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous is never get involved in a land war in asia, but only slightly less well known is this! Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line! |

Like the warning says, only drafting views can be transferred. This leaves you with a couple of options: 1. Start a new 'detail' project and establish drafting views to hold your details, then copy and paste your drafting lines and details components from the live project to the 'detail' project. You can then insert these views into new projects. This works great for 'static' standard details that have no relationship to the model or your are willing to live without that live relationship. 2. What most people really should be focusing on is 'embellishing' the live model cut with detail comonents and drafting lines/text. This rules out a 'drafting view' as those do not display the model. In this case it is then best to 'group' your detail embellishments in the live project and save those groups out of Revit: File>Save to Library>Save Group You can then load those saved groups into anothr project to embellish you live model cuts. File>Load from Library>Load Group
