I am trying to put a void into a profile of a fascia and keep receiving this error:

"Host can't be cut because it has no geometry."

I am trying to create this void by creating an in place family. In sketch mode it looks exactly how I would like it but when I go to finish family, no deal.

What's up with that?!  Please help!

Also fyi, I used the cut geometry tool to cut the void out of the fascia profile in the in-place family.  like I said, it looks all good but when I go to finish family all I get is an error.

I'm not sure what you are trying to do because your image file doesn't read.

Why don't you start by building your family from the profile template?  Profiles are formed from closed line-work that can not overlap.  In other words, every line must meet another line at its end points.   If you need a void in the profile, it can be another closed series of line-work that must be completely inside your perimeter.  For instance, a pipe shaped profile could be a circle within a circle.

Here is the image again... hopefully it makes more sense.

you might have to expand the window or hit the "expand to regular size button" to fully view the image

Sorry - still doesn't make sense.

I think you may be confused about what reveals / sweeps do.  This looks like it may be some sort of fireplace mantle.  If so, build it complete as a family.

ok, lets try this again. the first image shows where on my building i am talking about.  the second shows what i want it to look like.  the printscreen is taken while im in the in-place family and looks correct but as soon as i hit the finish family button, no luck

if i could build this as a complete family i would,  but i want to use the profile/sweep for the fascia so i can attach it to any length wall.  the plan was to then go back and cut out the reveals/voids.

for anyone that's curious, the error i was making was that you have to select the wall as the initial work plane for void/solid extrusions with a create in-place family.  Then once you're in sketch mode, set the work plane to the fascia or profile sweep you are working with.

don't know if this will help anyone but i'm just glad to get it figured out.
