We are starting a project consisting of 9 buildings. We are planning on having separate models for each building. If we go this route, how are we going to combine the sheets to make a coherent, correctly numbered set of construction documents? Is it just as simple as linking them together in a master file and creating the drawings there, or is there a more complex method? This will be our first official project in Revit and any input would be greatly appreciated.

I think the answer to this depends primarily on how the project is going to be bid or built and on your company's project standards. You say you will have 9 separate models which tells me they are not identical buildings so I would have a CD set for each building and then a model with all the buildings linked together in a site plan to indicate where each building goes. I would probably have one coversheet in the Site plan model and then just make the sheets in the other 9 models (Labeled something like (A1-1, A1-2 for building 1; A3-1, A3-2 for building 3, etc). I'm pretty sure that when you link the building models into the site model, it will NOT link the sheets in also so you will have to manually input the remaining sheets (unless someone know another way) This is just how I would do it though. Best of luck!

You fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous is never get involved in a land war in asia, but only slightly less well known is this! Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line! |

They are going to bid and being built as one complete set. We were hoping that there would be a way to combine the sheets in such a way that we have one set of drawings for floor plans, RCP's, Section & Details, etc. for all of the buildings, not a combination of sets for each building. We have talked about including the building number as part of the sheet title, but are afraid that this may cause confusion or lead to the thinking that there are missing sheets.

This question has come up before where I worked. It is difficult to answer but I think the best way is to have separate building in separate files. I know it seems hard. In my problem we had one set of details used for 6 homes. We didn't want to add the sheet to all the sets but still we wanted to reference the details on each building. We ended up adding a bunch of false detail references to 5 of the six building. Not pretty. I wouldn't recommend that. If I was doing it again I would add the details to each building.

In that case I would recommend doing separate models (we all seem to agree on that) and then linking them into a project model where you create your sheets. Make the views and details you need for each building in this project instead in the individual model (assuming that when you link a model into another project, the views do not link in. I've never tried this before so I don't know). Makes the most sense to me. How you number the sheets depends on how your firm decides to handle that.
