I am relatively new to Revit, and I could really use some help with setting up a mass schedule that makes sense for a large commercial project.  I have been working on commercial projects where we have a mix of retail space, office space, residential space, etc.  I have been creating masses for all the different components and then establishing a mass schedule to give me square footages for the different masses.

My question:  In some of my current models, I have several masses for retail, several masses for residential, and several masses for office.  All masses are in place families that are individually named with names similar to Retail 1, Retail 2, etc.  I can get my schedule to give me a grand total of square footage for the entire development, but is there a way to organize the schedule to also give me subtotals of retail, office, etc?  Is there a setting in the element properties?  And do I have to be careful about what I name the masses in order to achieve this?

Any input would be most appreciated!

Easiest way is to go to is go to the properties of each massing family and add a description of 'retail' office' etc. to the 'description' field.  Then in the mass schedule add the field description to the schedule.  Sort and group on'description'.  Be sure to check footer, blank line and totals.  In the formatting tab be sure to set gross area as a 'calculate totals' field.
