I'm working on creating several objects - mostly architectural embellishments for the office.

I know how to create pretty much everything but like to streamline the process if someone uses the elements.

for example I have several shapes as profiles for moldings that then can be used as extrusions.

How would I create a dentil molding or anything that is not uniform ? I know I can place it into a modal as an in-place object but like something that is more sophisticated. Is there a way to create an object with an if-then boolean.

For example if a molding reaches a certain length then add another dentil ?

thanks for any input.

Norm

You may want to look at the tutorial on this site for parametric arrays.  I think this will help you in what you are looking for.  Let us know if you have any questions about the tutorial.

Also, I attached a detail component family that has an array with multiple if/then boolean functions to aid in the visibility.  Take a look at that and let me know if you have any questions.

thanks a lot rkitec. I got it to work. Exactly what I needed.

Now I'm thinking about curved moldings. I know I can create an extrusion with an adjustible radius and a radial array but is there a way to have them both in one family - a straight and a curved option ?

I tryed with just an adjustible extrusion - no dentils for now.

I created an extrusion with a 3-point arch as a path that has an adjustible radius. Problem is that I can't use the arch to make a straight extrusion, because the 'radius' of a straight is infinite.

Not sure if it is possible to have a straight extrusion and the curved one as an option; the user would have an adjustible straight molding with a yes/no parameter for curves. Preset to 'no' means straight. When selected 'yes' the straight extrusion is turned off (not sure if that is possible at all) and the curved one turns on.

Or would it work with nested families ? One straight, one curved nested in a family as options.

I hope I explained that correctly.

Thanks everybody for any input

rkitect, what version of Revit are you running?  I couldn't get your file to open.  I think I have the lastest version on my computer.

I will try and find the dentil molding that I made for a project a while back and upload it, but you'll probably be able to make one the same way I did just as easily and it will be the size, etc. that you want. I made a "rail" profile for the trim piece where a dentil does not occur and a dentil as a "baluster". Set the spacing, offset and the "rail" heights and you're ready to go. Sketch a path (straight, curved, whatever) and the trimwork will even clean/chamfer itself around corners this way.

On an aside, is the cashmoter in this thread the one that went to UT? Really, though, how many Cash Moters can there be...outside linear geneology?

That detail would be great if you can find it.

I did go to UT, who is this?  I looked at your profile and didn't get any info.

This is David from the grad class behind you. I forgot about user profiles...that would have answered my question. Should we all break out into a chorus of "It's a Small World" now?

I'm going to temporarily put my email address in my profile, so you can get it and email me. We should keep in touch, especially since we both can be Revit resources for each other.

Well, I don't know how to get a Railing family out of my project in one piece (and I don't have the time to figure it out), so here is a project file with not a lot in it but the dentil molding made out of a Railing. It is nice in that you just sketch your path and set your height and it's done. It chamfers around corners and radiuses around curves. With some tweaking (getting the "balusters" to angle) you could slope it up a gable rake. The only drawback that I can think of is that it schedules as a "rail" if you are doing material takeoffs. Any comments appreciated. By the way, if anyone has a tip on how to get Railing Systems out in one piece/family (if it's possible), I have a French Quarter-style wrought-iron balcony-canopy Railing System I'll upload.

I didn't look at the project, but it sounds like you could achieve the same with a line based family.  Then you could put the dentil molding in a more appropriate family category (as opposed to railing).  That's what the metal stud family is about: repeating patterns based on how long the family is.  Now what happens at a corner with a line based family, idunno.  I've never tried that yet.
