The project is at a presentation point where there IS a lot of 3D stuff in it that will be dumped when it goes to CD's but very little extra 3D families were added during the hour, certainly not 30megs worth!!!!  I came in the next day, deleted three rooms where the 3D cabinets were unnecessary, checked the size and it was back to 38megs.  I didn't think to check to see if the freshly opened job file was already down close to that before I started deleting cabinets, but I suspect it was since those few cabinets couldn't have been the source of the extra 30 megs, had been in the project for a long time, and those earlier saves were in the 30 meg range.

Can the Revit project grow an extra 30 megs during a workday that then disappears after it is saved and closed down?  Is it saving stuff as I work on it that can accumulate to being bigger than the project itself?  The 69meg file basically shut down Windows Explorer and took forever to save at the end of the day, then it opens up the next day like nothing happened.

 What am I doing wrong?

Are you looking at the actual file size or folder size?

I didn not even do the sloped glazing work around in order to realistically portray the standing seam roof.  There were not even any 3D views active in the project.  There are several custom made families of daycare furniture and a funky "Chronicles of Narnia" light/sign post (see attached image), but they are the only 3D items other than cabinets, doors, etc.  I even changed all of my 3D toilets to 2D and it was still 68+megs.  These same items are mostly still there and it is now 38megs.  What gives?

Does this answer the question?

This is the type of stuff in the job but, again, it is in both the 38meg and 69meg saves one done late one day and the other done early on the next.

There are a few things which I can think of which could cause the file size to baloon and deflate like you are saying.  I have noticed in the past if there are several views which are shaded and have shadows turned on and those views are open when the file is saved that it will cause the file size to increase.  Also, if there are multiple users and worksets in the project, and files are saved back frequently this can increase the size of the central file, this can be corrected by regular maintainence of the central file (auditing, compacting, etc.).

I really like to do shadowed elevations but have learned the hard way what a huge file THAT creates.  With a few exceptions shown in the posts above, I have avoided as many of the "too many renderings", "too much site/topo in 3D", "too many trees/people/cars", etc. that cause some Revit projects to be so large.  That is why I am really puzzled about this one.

There are a number of reasons as to why this will. Your 2 main culprits are usually DWG files that were imported into the project or from a family even. The other main factor is a lot of in place families which can really bog down a project. I know that if you don't close all other views other than the one you are currently using it will make the file size larger. A good thing is to once rename the file which should reduce file size. You can compress the file when rename the file which will also help it a little.
