I've created an in place family under category site, solid form, solid extrusion. After I create my object I select finish sketch but my file is still in edit mode. How do I get back to normal mode? thanks

hit finish family right underneath where you click for your sweeps. If this wasn't the answer, see if you can post a screenshot of where you're stuck.

My problem is the Finish Family & Quit Family selection is grayed out so I'm unable to finish the family. see attached

I'm sorry, I don't know what's going on there. It shouldn't be as far as I know. Could hit the ESC key but you probably already did that. I would just try to save the file, close Revit and restart it. Revit occasionally has a little hiccup with no rhyme or reason.
