OK, here is what I did to succesfully filter walls:
Open your Visibility Graphics dialogue (type 'VG') and go to the Filters tab.

Click Add then Edit/New to get to the Filters dialogue. Here we will add your wall filter.

Create a new filter, name it and then choose Walls from the categories list. Under Filter Rule, I have choosen to filter by Type Name, you can choose whatever parameter you wish to filter by. My Filter dialogue looks like this when finished with the filter rules:

Click OK twice to get back to the Visibility Graphics dialogue. Here you will add the filter. Click Add, then select the Filter you just created. Click OK to be back Visibility Graphics dialogue. You should now be able to control the walls that are in that filter subset by clicking and unclicking the Visibillity Yes/No paramter. Example:
I have 6 walls, alternating between a generic wall type and a wall type with 'CMU' in the type name.

Iturn the visibility for the filter off, et voila!

I also like to make a yes/no instance parameter for walls called "Do not Show Wall" with a filter so I can turn individual walls off in different views.
Let me know if you have any problems or questions about this.
pS: If the images do not show up, you will have to copy and paste the link to view them. Sorry
You fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous is never get involved in a land war in asia, but only slightly less well known is this! Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line!
