how do i change the finish material on a door that has no finish listed in the element properties and it won't paint? often times i download a component that has no color and when i select it and go to its properties there is no changing its finish or adding color and it also does not paint.. how do i apply finishes to all these components that only render white with gray shading?

You need to go into the properties of each object in the family and create a new material parameter that exposes to the user the ability to change the material definition. See attached images for a better explanation.
