Hello all.

I've been having trouble creating component families with adjustable lengths. When creating casework components, such as a countertop, I can create an "instance parameter" which, when loaded into a project, allows me to adjust the length of it directly in the project, by click/dragging the little blue arrowheads on the end of the countertop. Obviously, this is great for special circumstances where a component's length isn't a standard length or is perhaps a different length in several places throughout a model. However, I've only been able to produce this result with the casework template.

The other day, I wanted to create a door component family with a glass door in an aluminum frame, with 3 sidelights, which are all 3 equal width, however, throughout the model, there are several places where it might be used, all areas having a different dimension. So, if I could create a component which would load at a default length, such as 8' for example, in an area where the length might be 9'7 3/4" or something, I could just click/drag the frame to the desired overall length, and the 3 sidelights could remain the equal distance. Any suggestions on how to create this in-plan adjustable parameter? Any help would be so greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

-Jason

Very easy to do. Just made a 3 panel bifold door with equal panels. Usually before I add any modelling I try to set up the reference planes/lines I might need. I between the 2 length reference lines add 2 more ref. lines. Then dimension  the outside length ref lines & the 2 ref lines you just added. Once you have done that EQ the dimensions. When you model the door panels lock the sides to these ref lines so that the door will flex as one.

If you want adjustable grips, you have to do a couple things. You need to have your labeled dimension attached to ref planes, the ref planes must be set to something other than "Not a reference", and the length parameter must be an instance parameter.
