i want to create a railing system from scratch. i have some experience with families and am searching all thru the tutorials but nothing is specific on making an entire railing. i want it to look like some fancy metalwork that will be custom built to specs. is it even possible.

Yes it is possible the best place to look for information on this i just looked it up is in the Autodesk Revit Building User's Guide it is the manual that Autodesk has put out alot of people don't use it becouse they think it is hard to understand I think it is a great book.

Do a tutorial on PROFILES (in the program). The shapes of your railings will be controlled with these...and they are the easiest families to create. You will probably have to do some of it as an in-place family if you need a spectatular interior view...the hard stuff (fancy metalwork) placed in-between the easy/basic stuff (balusters/ posts). It's completely possible, consider not to trying to model EVERYTHING. Too hard. Use detail lines for the intricate and "hard to model" stuff.
