I've heard word that it is possible to lock your 2d detail to the 3d model, so that changes made to the model will be reflected in the detail, and or vice versa. I checked the first few pages with a search for a related topic, but didn't want to spend days reading backwards.

So, if you could either tell me that it is possible and how it works, direct me towards an article with the information, or laugh at the naiveity and tell me that it is not possible, I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!

Although I'm not entirely sure what kind of details you're talking about, I have locked detail components to the model so that when things shift in the model the detail components move.

Specifically, I had a detail component of a truss that I wanted to lock to the floor so that if floor to floor heights change, the detail moves with it.  I placed the detail component in the view, then used the align tool to align the detail to the floor and locked the alignment.

Hope this helps,

Laura

Thanks Laura. To be more specific, I think the idea here was, for example, a 2D wall detail in a section view, composed of components, lines, filled regions, etc., could be locked to the corresponding wall in the building model. If the floor to floor height changed, the detail lines and components would accomodate that change.

Personally, I don't think there's a hope that Revit would be able to do that, but I thought I'd ask around first.

Actually it is possible and preferable to lock the 2D components to the 3D Revit model.  The best way I have donw it is rather than lock each 2D component individually is to place them all, group them and them use the align and lock function on a meaninful part of the group to a meaninful part on your model.  You can use 2D CAD details in this fashion as well or you could also embed the 2D CAD detail into your family so that when the family is cut in section the CAD destail displays.  There is an AU class that was recorded at AU2005 by Scott Davis on detailing which goes through all of this.  If you are a subscription member yu can access via the subsription site.
