I want to change the style of the elevation heads in plan view,  but as usual I cant even find let alone open the standard one to edit it ....any suggestions much appreciated

Alas, and unfortunately, these tags are "system" families. While there are minor modifications that you can make, you cannot "change" the tag to something different. (And an issue if I say so myself. State of Virginia has tag standards and requirements.)  One more for the wishlist I guess. In order to make the minor changes though, select the tag and bring up properties. You can modify the tag to be round, vs. square, etc. there.

hi from brisbane

mr spot had a great tutorial on his blog about making an elevation symbol from a section symbol.  i did it on a project some months ago, and it was great.  so - maybe the answer is, do something similar by creating a section symbol that matches your needs, then adjust as per mr spot's advice?  search this forum for mr spot / elevation tag maybe?
