Im not sure if it is possible but can i import a libarary from one family to another to save doing all the colours and textures again?

It is possible to import the library (you mean the material, texture, object style,line pattern, fill pattern, render settings etc) from one family to another in the family editor. Use the 'Transfer project standard' from the file menu.
