One of revit's nice features is that when you export 3d data in max,it's easy to identify and group the different objects(walls, railings, etc) because they are named accordingly( press "H"-select by name in max).
So,if you import in max a house modelled in revit,it will be easy to select and group the walls, doors components, you name it,and asign a max material to this particular group.
By default, these objects will come with the "arhitectural materials" assigned,at least with their names.
The fact that 3d objects doesn't come with the revit material attached is maybe a good thing if you plan to use a 3-rd party render engine, like final render or v-ray,because they are optimised for their own material type, thus reducing rendering time a lot, really.
