This might be a dumb question, but does anyone know how to delete families from a project files, I have some families that I'm no longer using and I want to get the file size smaller.

If you're talking about purging unused Families, Its:
File>Purge Unused, Check None, and select the families you want to purge. Be sure to check the select none prior top purging as it will take out all unused families
