In reference to the wood bracket from the family explorer, how do I attach this to columns instead of walls?

Not sure what "wood braket" you are refering to. Did you create it, or find it in a library or online?
Chances are that the creator used a wall hosted template to create it which means it will only use a wall as a host. A better creation method is to make a non-hosted version you embed into the hosted version.
You may have to re-create a new non-hosted or workplane based verion. Post the .rfa and maybe somone can take a look at what is involved.
